William Joseph Maher

William Joseph Maher, 90, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2024. He was born February 27,1934 in Cornwall, New York. The son of  Francis A. and Helen (Coon) Maher.  

Known as Willy to his friends and Bill to his family he graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1955  and shortly after served in the United States Army in Japan.  Upon returning from overseas he met and married the love of his life, Patricia G. Keist, on May 1, 1960 at St. Mary’s Church in Newburgh, New York.  Both were lifelong residents of Newburgh where they raised a family for 63 years.   

Bill was an avid sports fan and was most proud of playing for Newburgh Free Academy Men’s Varsity Basketball team as well as being a lifetime member of the Newburgh Y. M. C.A. He was a Firefighter for the City of Newburgh for 19 years as well as the treasurer

 for the Local #589 before and after his retirement.  His easy going nature, quick wit and humor, along with his life lessons that he taught his family will be missed.   He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was one of a kind.  

William is survived by his son Sean Maher of Murrells Inlet ,South Carolina; daughter Meghan Malnic and her husband Mark of Newburgh; three grandchildren; Madeline Maher, Cody Maher and Mason Malnic; his nephew Frank Maher III and his wife Valerie. He was

 predeceased by his wife Patricia; his son Shane Maher; and his brother Frank Maher II.  

In lieu of flowers those who wish to remember Bill may make contributions in his memory to the Parkinson’s Foundation
