As we reflect on the passage of time, February 27, 2024, stands out as a momentous day in history. It marks the 20th anniversary of a groundbreaking act of civil disobedience that forever altered the course of LGBTQ+ rights—the first same-sex marriages performed by Village of New Paltz Mayor Emeritus Jason West in Peace Park.

In 2004, Mayor West’s decision to officiate same-sex marriages in defiance of state law sent ripples across the nation and beyond. At a time when the fight for LGBTQ+ rights was still met with staunch opposition, West’s bold move was a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change. It was a pivotal moment that challenged the status quo, pushing the boundaries of acceptance and equality.

Two decades later, we find ourselves celebrating not just an act of civil disobedience, but a triumph of love over discrimination. The significance of West’s actions resonates far beyond the borders of New Paltz; it symbolizes a broader movement towards a more inclusive and equitable society.

To honor this historic event, the New Paltz Pride Coalition hosted a “Love is Love” Fundraiser, creating a space for celebration, reflection, and solidarity. The event not only commemorates the progress made in the last two decades but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing work needed to ensure that love knows no boundaries.

The “Love is Love” Fundraiser is not just a party; it is a testament to the strength and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community. It is a showcase of the progress made in dismantling discriminatory barriers and fostering a society that values and cherishes every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation.

As we revel in the festivities, let us also acknowledge the challenges that persist. Despite the leaps forward, the LGBTQ+ community still faces adversity and discrimination in various forms. The fight for equality is ongoing, and events like the Drag Brunch Fundraiser serve as a reminder that solidarity and support are essential elements in this ongoing struggle.

The 20th anniversary of the first same-sex marriages in New Paltz is an opportunity for us to reflect on the journey traveled and the road that lies ahead. It prompts us to celebrate the victories, learn from the struggles, and rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of a world where love is truly love, free from prejudice and discrimination.

Mayor Emeritus Jason West’s act in 2004 planted the seeds of change, and today, as we gather to commemorate this milestone, we water those seeds, nurturing a future where acceptance and equality flourish. It is a declaration that love knows no boundaries, and together, we can continue to forge a more inclusive and compassionate world for generations to come.
