Alexa Trapani wins Ulster golf title

Alexa Trapani continued her strong golf season, winning the Ulster County Women’s Golf Association championship on July 28 by 33 strokes.

Trapani finished with a three-day score of 230, defeating three-time champion Kim Hines, who finished second with a three-day score of 263 strokes.

“It was really nice to win and see the ladies,” Trapani said. “I’m not saying that I’m 100 times better than them, but it was nice to go out there, and play my game and get some compliments.”

The tournament started July 27 at Apple Greens Golf Course, where Trapani played her home matches during the last two high school spring seasons.
She shot an 18-hole score of 73 on the tournament’s first day. Hines was her closest competitor, nine shots behind her.

“It was definitely the best course to start with,” Trapani said. “I’m more confident on that course, being that it’s my home course and it just gave me confidence going into the second round that I had a nine-shot lead.”

The tournament continued at Green Acres Golf Club in Kingston.

That’s where Trapani had her toughest day. She shot an 80, but Hines was six strokes behind her, allowing Trapani, who, at all of 14 years old, to take a 15-stroke lead into the final day of the three-day tournament.

It enabled her to let her game fly on the tournament’s final day.

“It definitely led me to go for more shots that I wouldn’t go for, and it gave me more confidence knowing that I had that big of a lead. I was less nervous going into the third day.”

That last day took place at Wiltwyck Golf Club, also in Kingston.

She shot a 77 and Hines fell further behind, shooting a 95 on the 18-hole final day, sealing Trapani’s first victory in the tournament.

She played in the tournament last year and finished ninth. The experience was instrumental in this year’s success.

“It definitely helps know what to expect and knowing the scores coming in, like how the women did last year, and knowing what I had to beat,” Trapani said.

It wasn’t the only tournament success she had. The previous week, she won the NENY PGA Junior Golf Tour Summy Major No. 3 at Western Turnpike Golf Course in Guilderland. She beat Tegan Mahoney by two strokes.

She also won a NENY tournament at Eagle Crest Golf Club in Clifton Park. She shot a 76 on the tournament’s first day and a 77 on the second to win her age group (13-15).

She’s just going to keep playing until the school year starts.
