The result wasn’t what they wanted, but the Marlboro Mighty Marlins 9U baseball team got a taste of the big stage when they traveled to Aberdeen, Md., to participate in the Cal Ripken Experience’s Turn Two Tournament on Aug. 10 and 11

Overall, the Marlins played three games, losing the first two, but winning their final game of the tournament for a 13th place finish.

The Mighty Marlins played three games over the course of two days, the first two of which were on Aug. 10. Those were pool play losses to Competitive Edge and the Watchung Hills Warriors.

Their first loss of the tournament was a 22-16 slugfest that they lost to Competitive Edge.

Mason Garnot doubled and drove in two runs and Benjamin Skulky had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Riley Bell scored two runs and Deacon Ashworth had two runs scored and an RBI.

The Marlins trailed 13-12 heading into the sixth inning, but Competitive Edge blew the game open with eight runs in the sixth inning.

They lost their next game, 17-5, to the Warriors, who took a 6-2 lead after the first inning and expanded it to 11-4 after the second.

Garnot doubled, scored a run and drove in a run. Timmy Trapani drove in a run, and Tommy Tudico tripled and scored a run.

Their 0-2 performance put them in Sunday’s 13th-place game against BP, a game the Marlins won 13-5 to end their tournament.

Skulky led the Marlins with three hits, including a double, scored one run and drove in four. Sebastian Ortiz had three hits and four runs score. Duey Melendez had three hits, including two doubles, scored two runs and drove in two. Tommy Tudico drove in two runs.

When they weren’t playing, the Marlins also traveled to Washington D.C. to watch the Washington Nationals host the Los Angeles Angels.
