Nominating process

Posted

With regard to County Legislator Corcoran’s misleading and inaccurate comments to the Marlborough Democratic Committee’s process for nominating candidates, clarification is needed.

In NYS candidates are selected through a caucus; an open meeting of a town or village’s political party at which candidates are nominated for elective office. Only residents of the town or village who are enrolled members of the party may participate in the caucus or through a designating petition (party designations for this primary are made on a designating petition. The New York State Election Law sets forth the form of this petition.  Only enrolled members of a party qualified to vote for an office may sign designating petitions of the party.).

With the designating petition process all party members have the ability to participate as opposed to a caucus in which attendance is required at a specific date, place, and time.

The MDC choose the designating petition process to increase participation, transparency and in light of the COVID gathering restrictions in place at that time.  Nothing secret or underhanded but open and fair and consistent with NYS BOE. Democratic candidates Lanzetta and Baker obtained signatures which far exceeded the 38 people who gathered at the Cluett Schantz Park.

Accurate representation of issues, concerns and candidates is imperative to good decision-making and healthy government.  Consider attending the Marlborough Town Board meetings or watching them on YouTube.  Become informed and participate.
