The Newburgh Nuclears were eliminated from the Junior District 9 tournament on Saturday afternoon, when they suffered a 13-3 loss to the Kingston-Saugerties Royal on Saturday afternoon at Stony Point Little League.

Overall, the Nuclears went 0-2 in the tournament.

The Nuclears opened the tournament, suffering a 10-3 loss to the Rockland Pirates on Friday night.

The Nuclears trailed 5-3 when the Pirates scored four runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach. Danny Barra and Collin Prisco each hit solo home runs for the Pirates.

The Nuclears scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning on two bases-loaded walks and a run-scoring single by Christian Shorey.

Overall, the Junior Nuclears went 2-4 during the regular season, finishing four games behind first-place Rockland, a team Ceriello said he expects to win the American Legion Junior State Championship.

Ceriello said Friday night that, even in the loss to Rockland, where the Nuclears made several key errors, if they played better defense, they would have been right in the game with heavily favored Pirates.

It’s been an even rougher season for the Senior Nuclears who went 0-5 in district play over the summer, finishing four games behind the Rockland Black and Rockland Yellow teams, which finished tied for first place.

The Nuclears didn’t play in the senior tournament.

It’s been a Nuclears’ season that coach Shea Ceriello described as “disjointed” as the team has struggled to find places to play without access to their longtime home at Delano-Hitch Park.
