Restore dignity: preserving hallowed burial grounds

Posted

As we enter Black History Month, it is essential to reflect on the significance of preserving and restoring the burial grounds of former slaves and other African Americans. These sacred sites stand as powerful reminders of the struggles, resilience, and contributions of the Black community throughout history. One local site serves as s poignant examples of the need to safeguard these hallowed grounds for future generations.

The largest and earliest-known African American burial ground in Orange County, located along Route 416 in the Town of Montgomery, comprises 171 known grave markers on 0.46 acres. This historic cemetery, registered with the National Park Service in 1996, holds the stories of individuals who lived through slavery, segregation, and the fight for civil rights. Preserving this site is not just an act of historical conservation; it is a commitment to acknowledging and honoring the lives that shaped our shared narrative.

Preserving and restoring this African American burial ground is not just about safeguarding physical spaces; it is about acknowledging the humanity and dignity of those who came before us. By doing so, we create a more inclusive and accurate historical narrative that fosters understanding, compassion, and unity within our communities.

The Sacred Place of My Ancestors (SPOMA) Fund will support the revitalization of this historic cemetery. Visit cfosny.org, the website of the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan if you’d like to help preserve this sacred site.

As we celebrate Black History Month, let us renew our commitment to ensuring that the stories of the past are not lost and that the resting places of our ancestors are treated with the respect and honor they deserve.
