Plattekill Library presents A Puppet Palooza
The Plattekill Public Library will host “Waffle & Friends: A Puppet Palooza” on Thursday, August 15, at 6 p.m. The puppet variety show will feature a fuzzy creature, musical bugs, a witty owl and an energetic chicken, all performing songs and skits designed to entertain and educate.

Highland Public Library hosts Summer Reading Finale
The Highland Public Library invites all summer readers to its annual Ice Cream Social on August 15.
The library’s Community Fridge and Pantry is also in need of replenishment. Donations of perishable and non-perishable food items are welcome, with a particular need for personal care products, baby food, diapers, and wipes. The library thanks the community for its generosity and reminds everyone that the fridge and pantry are available to all in need.
Additionally, Highland Public Library now offers free access to Driving-Tests.org, a comprehensive driver education platform. This service provides patrons with practice tests, state driver’s manuals, and various resources to help individuals prepare for their DMV knowledge exams. The platform is accessible via the library’s website and supports all drivers, from beginners to those renewing their licenses.
The library is located at 14 Elting Place, Highland. Saturday Summer hours are 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. through Labor Day.
Rotary presents vegetable giveaway
The Southern Ulster Rotary will hold a senior vegetable giveaway this Saturday, August 17, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Plattekill Public Library, 2047 NY-32, in Modena. Local seniors are invited to receive free organic vegetables grown by local farms. The program will run for five weeks. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own bags. Refreshments will be available in the library’s community room.

St Augustine’s hosts food pantry
St. Augustine’s School will host a food pantry on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The pantry is located at 35 Phillips Avenue, Highland. Attendees should enter on Phillips Avenue and proceed to the rear gym parking lot.

Lloyd UMC to host chicken BBQ
Lloyd United Methodist Church will host a curbside pickup Chicken Bar-B-Q on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024, from 4 to 6 p.m. The meal, prepared by Sal’s of Highland, includes half a chicken, cornbread, baked beans, coleslaw, and dessert.

Milton Engine Co. No. 1 to host Lobster & Steak Bake fundraiser
Milton Engine Co. No. 1 is set to hold its annual Lobster & Steak Bake fundraiser on Saturday, August 24, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the firehouse on Main Street in Milton.
Tickets are priced at $100 per person and include a 1¼ lb lobster and access to an all-you-can-eat selection featuring steak from a carving table, clams (both raw and steamed), corn on the cob, salad, and more. The event also offers unlimited draft beer, soda, and water.
Attendees will enjoy live entertainment and can participate in a 50/50 raffle and a “Basket of Cheer” raffle. The fundraiser supports Milton Engine Co. No. 1 and its community services.
Tickets can be purchased in advance, and early booking is recommended due to limited availability.
Town of Lloyd to host annual seniors’ breakfast
In Recognition of National Senior Citizen Day, Town of Lloyd Supervisor Dave Plavchak cordially invites Town of Lloyd Seniors to join him for the Supervisor’s Senior Breakfast on Thursday, August 29, 9:30 - 11 a.m. at the Bob Shepard Highland Landing Park, River Road, Highland.

Veterans Appreciation Night coming to the Walkway
Ulster and Dutchess counties are teaming up with Walkway Over the Hudson to present the inaugural “Salute2Vets” Veterans Appreciation Night on Sept. 20. The event, running from 6 to 9 p.m., is free and open to the public, featuring food trucks, beverages, and a fireworks display over the Hudson River.
Dutchess County Veteran Services and MHA Dutchess Vet2Vet will host resource and informational tables for veterans at the East Side entrance, where veterans and their families can enjoy free food, music, and entertainment. Ulster County Veteran Services and HVNCVR Vet2Vet will provide similar offerings at the West Side entrance.
At 7:30 p.m., a procession led by Pipes and Drums will bring together guests from both entrances. They will meet near the center of the walkway at the American flag for a ceremony honoring veterans, followed by a fireworks display. A special viewing area will be reserved for veterans and their guest.
Plattekill Day is Sept. 21
Plattekill Day 2024 will be celebrated on Saturday, September 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Thomas Felten Community Park. The event features a car show, live music, vendors and food. In case of rain, the festivities will be held on Sunday, September 22.

Second Annual Family Scarecrow Building Event Set for Oct. 5
The Town of Lloyd Beautification Committee is hosting the Second Annual Family Scarecrow Building event on Saturday, October 5, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lewis C. DiStasi Pavilion. In case of rain, the event will be held on October 6.
Participants are encouraged to help decorate the Highland Hamlet for the season. All necessary supplies will be provided, but attendees are welcome to bring their own materials and create a theme for their scarecrows.
Children’s clothing and costume donations are being accepted for the event, and children must be accompanied by an adult. A donation drop box is located at Town Hall.
