Hudson Valley stars head to BCANY classic

Seven local players will fill the Hudson Valley roster this weekend at the Basketball Coaches Association of New York’s Summer Hoopfest in Johnson City.

The team will be led by Wallkill standout rising senior Zoe Mesuch, who will be making her third trip to the tournament, which is modeled after the old Empire State Games.

Local players will make up the Mid-Hudson team and will play teams from other regions of the state, such as Buffalo, Central New York, Long Island, Southern Tier, Rochester, and the North Country.

Marlboro guard Gabby Murphy and Valley Central center Maggie Bishopp are the only two local players making their second trip to Hoopfest. Kingston’s Ava Scaturro and Beacon’s Reilly Landisi are also making return trips.

Pine Bush teammates and rising seniors Ketura Rutty and Leticia Watson are going for the first time, along with Highland rising senior guard Samantha Calahan. Newburgh Free Academy’s star guard, rising sophomore T.T. Burden, also will make her first trip to the event.

Marlboro’s rising sophomore guard Nalyah Campbell has been named as an alternate.

The team will be coached by Wallkill coach A.J. Higby, who has coached the Panthers to three straight Section 9 championships and two straight appearances in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association regional finals. He will be assisted by Pine Bush coach Michelle Bouffard, who rebuilt her team into a sectional contender and Onteora coach Andy Occhi.

The team was scheduled for their first practice on Tuesday. They can only practice a maximum of four times and Higby said too many players were at Amateur Athletic Union tournaments earlier in July to get any earlier practice time in.

Mid Hudson finished fifth during last year’s event with a 69-55 win over Buffalo in the fifth-place game. Rochester won the girls’ championship last year, with Southern Tier taking the silver medal.

There are no local athletes on the boys’ team, but the Mid-Hudson team will be coached by the Wallkill boys’ basketball staff, led by Hunter Andrews.

Games will start on Friday, and the group schedule will conclude on Saturday. Teams will play for the championship on Sunday.
