Humanities New York has awarded the Friends of Newburgh Free Library a $5,000 grant for the Newburgh Free Library’s Harriet Tubman “Journey to Freedom” project. In fall of 2020 the Newburgh Free Library will display this Harriet Tubman sculpture from Emmy and Academy award-winner Wesley Wofford. The award will be used to facilitate programming, events and activities that tell the story of Newburgh and the Hudson Valley’s African American history through the struggles of slavery, racial equality, gender equality, poverty, suffrage and urban renewal, while also celebrating the significant and historic influence of black Americans on the growth of Newburgh and the intrinsic value of telling these stories through art, music, writing, and conversation to foster understanding, awareness and community.
