Maybrook to consider first responder tax break

Posted

If you are a volunteer firefighter or ambulance worker, you could get a tax break on your Maybrook property taxes, if all goes well with an upcoming public hearing.

The Maybrook Village Board will hold a public hearing 7 p.m. on Monday, Mar. 25, at the Govt. Center to consider a local law to provide a ten percent tax exemption for eligible volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers. The ten percent exemption would be taken off the volunteer’s assessed property valuation. So, if your home is assessed at $200,000, the exemption would reduce your property valuation to $180,000 and you would pay village taxes on that amount ($200,000 x 10% = $20,000 reduction).

The exemption would also apply to un-remarried spouses of volunteers.
Eligible requirements would include:
– You must be an enrolled member of an incorporated volunteer fire company, fire department or incorporated voluntary ambulance service which serves Maybrook;

– You must own the property in question, it must be your primary residence and must be used exclusively for residential purposes;
– You must meet the minimum service requirement of five years.

Eligible volunteers who serve more than 20 years would be granted the exemption for the rest of their lives. Un-remarried spouses of eligible members who have died and who have at least 20 years of service could also receive the exemption.
