The Pine Bush boys’ soccer team played the Monroe-Woodbury Crusaders to a scoreless tie after the first half.

Then, the Bushmen seemed to run out of steam as the Crusaders scored two quick goals to start the second, as they handed the Bushmen a 5-0 loss on Wednesday at Pine Bush High School.

“We played great, but as we got tired in the second half obviously, they were able to put some in,” Pine Bush coach Marc Gittleman said. “They are very good to very deep right. For us to match it, we have to figure out how to string together a full 80.”

The Crusaders got on the board immediately after the teams returned from the band.

Carlos Tarcios Perez scored a goal off an assist from Luka Tatanashuili in the game’s 43rd minute. Three minutes later, a header resulted in Monroe-Woodbury’s second goal off a pass from Fabrizio Skyner.

“They made some adjustments, they picked up their speed of play, and they found some openings,” Gittleman said. “You get a couple goals in early, it’s tough to bounce back from that sometimes.”

The ball continued to bounce the Crusaders’ way for the rest of the game.

Perez added his second goal in the 53rd minute.

Tatanashuili scored in the 77th minute and Markus Leitner added the Crusaders’ fifth goal, leaving the Bushmen frustrated at game’s end.

“We were frustrated offensively and frustrated defensively because we know we can do it,” Gittleman said. “We have to string together a full 80. We can’t do a one half at a time this game, and one half another time. I think that’s where the frustration is coming from, seniors wanting a solid end to their career.”

The score may have been even more lopsided without the efforts of Saavedra Santiago, who finished with 12 saves.

His goalkeeping helped ensure the game remained scoreless at halftime.

“He made some amazing saves even in the second half,” Gittleman said. “He’s a fantastic goalkeeper. He keeps us in a lot of games. He’s smart back there. He’s athletic, and he works his butt off. He’s an anchor back there for sure.”

The Bushmen (4-5, 1-3 OCIAA-I) finished the week playing in the championship game of the Jimmy Ranieri Memorial Tournament at James I. O’Neill High School.

The Bushmen beat the Marlboro Iron Dukes, 1-0 in overtime.

“We work hard,” Gittleman said. “We are young in some ways, but we have a lot of experience in it here. We’ve been nipped by the injury bug a little bit, but they were piecing it together. We grow game by game. We just have to find a way to string together a full 80.”
