Pine Bush Juniors fall in championship

The Pine Bush Little League Juniors baseball team suffered their only two losses in one night.

After running undefeated through the District 19 tournament and winning their first game of the Section 3 North tournament, Pine Bush lost two straight games to District 20 champion Harrison last Wednesday, falling in the sectional championship games.

“They just came out and the bats were strong,” Pine Bush manager Sven Demar said. “Our boys fought hard, but at the end of the day, we couldn’t capitalize, and they just beat us straight up fair and square.”

Harrison gave Pine Bush a bit of its own medicine, scoring eight runs in the first inning of the first game, on their way to a 14-2 5-inning win in the first game, and then scored four runs in the first inning of the second on their way to a 16-6 6-inning win to clinch the championship.

Both games were decided by the 10-run rule.

“We’ve been on the other foot where we’ve done it to other people,” Demar said. “Unfortunately, somebody gave us a taste of our own medicine tonight.”

Pine Bush opened the tournament on their home field with a 10-8 win over District 18 champion Stony Point on July 19.

Harrison heads off to finish their season in the state tournament, which began Saturday at Half Hollow Hills Little League in Otsego. The tournament is scheduled to run until Sunday.

Regionals and the Junior World Series have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite losing two of three games in the sectional tournament, Pine Bush has plenty to be proud of as the Juniors were the only baseball team to clinch a District championship, while the girls won softball championships in Minors, Majors and Seniors.

And even down big in both games, Pine Bush’s players never checked out of the contests.

“Teamship and camaraderie,” Demar said. “That’s what this team has been all about. They just keep picking each other up; they play well together. Even though they were losing, they were still up cheering for each other. They were still trying. They don’t give up, which is great.”
