Members of the Valley Central School Board learned of efforts to strengthen security at its March 4 meeting.

Stephen Ragni, Director of Safety & Emergency Preparedness, reported on the district’s efforts to improve security. In comparing the first quarter of this school year with last year, he said that all incidents have decreased 47 percent and physical altercations have dropped 67 percent.

Ragni reported on a number of security improvements. The district has added a visitor -aware system that allows personnel to know who is in buildings at all times. Visitors check in with identification, wear a visitor lanyard and are escorted to and from buildings. Valley Central has added outside security to assist with its hall monitor program; outside security will also help with after-school events.

The district has upgraded its in house radio system for more complete coverage and updated its alert system. Valley Central conducts combat active shooter training semi-annually. Ragni said SROs are present in every building and every district phone has an alert button.

Among other department reports, Nancy Fitzsimmons, Social and Emotional Support Specialist, talked about her roles. She facilitates learning on verbal de-escalation of conflicts. She helps students struggling with behavior and develops intervention plans.

The board will next meet March 18.
