This week I will share information on another Walden organization: the Walden Woman’s Club. On November 1, 1909 a meeting was held in the vestry of the Methodist Church and the Walden Woman’s Club came into being. Mrs. A. J. H. Reid was the first of many women to assume leadership of the Club and bring it to the place of prominence it holds in our community.

The motto of the WWC - TO BE, NOT SEEM - is attributed to Mrs. Reid. The Club is organized for mental, cultural and community improvement: for Philanthropic purposes and for encouraging generous public spirit. The next decade was spent organizing and planning the club’s goals. Membership grew. In 1915, WWC joined the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

During the following decades WWC started many programs, some of which continue to serve the local community today. In 1926 the Library Fund Drive began to support the Josphine-Louise Public Library. Social and cultural programs including plays and concerts wee offered in the community Scholarships and workshops were sponsored for local students. Support of Girl Scouting resulted in the creation of the Walden GS Council and the building of the Scout Cabin. Funding was provided for local health programs in the decades before the creation of Orange County; a Health and Welfare Department. WWC played a leading role in the creation of the Walden Day Care center and the Walden Senior Citizens Club. During the 1960s the Club ‘s prize winning Community Improvement project was the beautification of Wooster’s Grove, a gift to Walden from past WWC President Mrs. Edith Wooster. Walden Woman’s Club is not just about service. One of the key benefits of membership is acquiring the leadership skills that result in successful programming and projects.
